Brandon Aiyuk walked into the San Francisco 49ers offices on Friday afternoon with a clear message. The wide receiver told reporters he has recovered from a major knee injury and wants to play again. He arrived with agent Drew Rosenhaus to meet team officials and discuss ending a long dispute. This meeting marks the first step in a process that could bring Aiyuk back to the field or finally close the door on his time with the team.
The situation started with a severe injury in October 2024. Aiyuk tore the ACL, MCL, and meniscus in his right knee during a game against the Kansas City Chiefs. He has not played in an NFL game since that day. The team voided about $27 million in remaining guarantees in July 2025 because he missed rehab check-ins. In December, Aiyuk ceased appearing at the facility and was placed on the reserve/left-team list.
Health and Reinstatement Goals
Aiyuk spoke briefly to the media before heading inside. He said, “I’m feeling great, feeling healthy,” according to ESPN. He added, “It was a long recovery process, a long rehab process, but I’m back to 100% and looking to get reinstated to the National Football League.” This statement confirms he believes his body is ready for contact. The NFL requires him to apply for reinstatement to play again, a step he and Rosenhaus filed in late October.
However, a major financial hurdle remains. The league told Aiyuk this week that he must repay about $13 million in bonus money before he can return. A $23 million signing bonus was paid to him by the 49ers in 2024, along with an option bonus in 2025. Because he left the team before the 2025 season ended, he owes a portion of that cash. Rosenhaus stated before the meeting that they hope to resolve these issues so Aiyuk can play again.
Coach and Team Reactions
The 49ers coaching staff does not seem eager to welcome him back with open arms. Head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked what he expects to happen during the meeting. He replied, “No clue. Your guess is as good as mine,” per the New York Post. This cold response suggests the relationship is deeply broken.
Star tight end George Kittle also weighed in on the potential return. When asked if he thought Aiyuk would get into the facility, Kittle asked, “Do you think he gets into the facility?” according to the New York Post. The team had previously stated that Aiyuk played his last down for San Francisco. The general manager has also been blunt about his thoughts on the player.
Legal and Future Uncertainty
Legal trouble adds another layer to the drama. An outstanding arrest warrant exists for Aiyuk due to a exhibition of speed charge. Police were seen outside the stadium on Friday morning. It is unclear if Rosenhaus or Aiyuk has worked something out with the police away from the public eye. The agent said, “We don’t really have any comment about where he is going to play. We’ll keep that between us and the Niners.”
If the 49ers and Aiyuk reach an agreement, the team will have three options. They could release Aiyuk, trade him, or keep him on the roster. The path forward depends on whether they can settle the $13 million and if the coach is willing to bring him back.
